Carter Edwards, one of Australia’s most beloved country music radio broadcasters, passed away on Sunday (10 March). He was 81 years old.

Radio Info and 2 HD Newcastle shared the sad news. The latter is a broadcasting giant at which Carter worked until 2022. Carter started working at the 2SM Super Radio Network in 1986.

On 29 May 2022, Edwards “turned the horses home” for the final time, hosting his program Carter Edwards Country on 2 HD. He retired after more than 35 years on the air. You can listen to his final show here.

In 2005, Edwards was recognised for his time on the air, the achievements and the smiles he brought to listeners’ faces, getting inducted into the Australian Country Music Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Nine years later, in 2014, Edwards received the ICMA Award for Most Popular Commercial Radio Presenter.

In 2020, Edwards received the most significant award of all, the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM), for his work in the general division for service in broadcast media, particularly radio.

Edwards’ passing has been met with passionate tributes from the Australian country music community, with Tamworth singer Johanna Vitalone writing on Facebook, “What can I say but thank you for the laughs, thank you for being the awesome person you were. Thank you for the many many years (since I was a child) of support! Thank you for the phone calls and advice.”

In a statement, 2HD mentioned Edwards’ “profound impact on the Newcastle community and beyond”, writing that he did things “his way”.

The statement continued, “With over three decades of dedicated service, he brought joy and laughter to countless listeners, solidifying his place as a beloved figure in the hearts of many. His contributions to the Super Radio Network further cemented his legacy as a respected entertainer across Australia.

“As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate the memories and moments he shared with us. Carter's vibrant spirit and genuine camaraderie touched the lives of those around him, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and uplift for years to come.”

Musician, songwriter and teacher Kristen Jack praised Edwards for being “one of the biggest supporters of my music and always made time for me with interviews and airtime.” Jack thanked Edwards for his support over the years “and for always playing my music on radio. You will be missed.”

Newcastle musician Bob Corbett described Edwards as a “true exemplar of living authentically with kindness,” writing a moving tribute to a man who was a “true champion of my music whose impact reached across the airwaves.”
