“The cool thing about this video is that it lets you in on how the narrator is actually feeling, as opposed to how he’s presented in the song.”

Brett Young enlists his wife of nearly four years, Taylor Mills Young in his new music video for his positive breakup anthem, You Didn’t. It’s our Song of the Day.

The Seth Kupersmith-directed haunting music video finds Young lamenting the one who got away, with his wife portraying his ex-lover. Young and Kupersmith conceptualised the music video infusing bold visuals and subtle details throughout the painful journey of unrequited love.

Young shares, “The cool thing about this video is that it lets you in on how the narrator is actually feeling, as opposed to how he’s presented in the song. He is saying all the right things, so his girl doesn’t feel guilty, but then the video sheds light on how much of that is a lie, and how deeply he’s actually struggling. As always, Seth delivered beyond my wildest expectations and it’s never a bad day when you get to work alongside your beautiful wife!”

The Dann Huff-produced track was penned by Young along with Ashley Gorley, Jon Nite and Jimmy Robbins during a late-night co-writing session at a writers' retreat in Florida. You Didn't came about after the four bonded over their mutual love for Boyz II Men.

In our interview with Young last year, he said, “I write mostly ballads. If you give me a guitar and a bottle of whiskey and tell me to write a song by myself, you're getting a slow song every time. But I finally had this light bulb go off about the sad songs. If you think about it, mathematically, if you're lucky enough to have a happily ever after you still have breakup stories, and, if you're not lucky enough, you still have breakup stories. All of us in the history of the world have way more sad stories than happy ones talking about love! So, it’s easier to relate with a sad song.”

You Didn't is the third single from his Weekends Look a Little Different These Days album, which was released last June. The album also produced Lady, which was inspired by Taylor and their daughter, Presley, and Not Yet. The couple were married in 2018 and have two daughters.

Weekends Look A Little Different These Days follows his gold-certified Ticket To L.A., which debuted atop the Billboard Country Albums chart and his platinum self-titled debut, which dominated the Top 20 on the Country Albums chart for 37 weeks and contributed to over 5 billion streams globally.

Young began singing in the late 1990s when he stepped in to replace an absent leader of the band during a Christian worship meeting at high school. Inspired by Gavin DeGraw’s album Chariot as well as singer-songwriter Jeffrey Stelle, he decided to return to music following an elbow injury that cut short his pursuit of a professional baseball career.

Nowadays, the 40-year-old continues to capture the hearts of fans everywhere through his honest lyrics and West Coast-meets-Southern sound, aptly dubbed “Caliville” style.
