Our Song of the Day is the stripped-down and vocally driven country-pop track, The Thing Is by New Zealand county music singer-songwriter, Jody Direen.

Our Song of the Day is the sultry, stripped-down and vocally driven country-pop track, The Thing Is by New Zealand country music singer-songwriter, Jody Direen. The Thing Is follows her previous singles, All Nighter and My Fire, all of which feature on her current album, Smokin Ashes.

Jody says, “The Thing Is represents a time in my life when I met someone new and experienced feelings associated with new love. The Thing Is, the third single off my Smokin Ashes album, is about an emotional state many of us can relate to. It is that ‘honey moon' phase, the addictive feeling of being in-lust, the thrill of meeting someone for the first time, chemistry flying when there's a chance they don’t feel the same way. You dive in anyway, because it is what you want, besides, it's the not-knowing that makes you feel on top of the world.”

For the past 4 years after releasing her first album Breaks Out as part of her signing with Australian record label ABC Music; Jody has been in a whirlwind, clocking up miles on the ground and across the skies touring in both New Zealand – her birth country - and Australia, of which she feels is just as much her home as New Zealand.

Not only has Jody racked up mileage, but she has also secured accolades and acclaim for her music and strong vocals. Experiencing success early on the radio airplay and single charts for her hits: Loud, Tattoo, Together, Dirt Rich and Gimme the Beat. She also secured the Vodafone NZMA Tui winner for ‘Best Country Album’ for Shake Up in 2017.
