Straight No Chaser Puts A Holiday Spin On Walker Hayes’ 'Fancy Like'

First, Fancy Like by Walker Hayes began as a viral sensation after he and his family decided to make TikTok videos for fun during the pandemic, creating dances for several songs from his EP, Country Stuff. Then, he dropped the song as a single, which saw it race to the top of the Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. He then re-released the song as a duet with singer-songwriter Kesha. Now, American a cappella group, Straight No Chaser has put a festive spin on the tune titled Christmas Like, complete with holiday themed lyrics.

A collaboration between Straight No Chaser’s Walter Chase and Seggie Isho, Christmas Like, began when Chase decided to arrange Hayes’ song during the band’s summer tour.

Chase told Sounds Like Nashville, “It’s vibe, light heartedness and swagger immediately made me think it would relate to our audience. Our goal as a group is to try to give a creative twist to any song we perform. Fancy Like had become one of the biggest crossover hits in a long while, and we wanted to make it our own.” 

He adds, “As we are known as a holiday group to many, the idea was conceived to try to make our holiday ‘fancy like’. Seggie sketched out the theme for each verse and created the first draft of lyrics. I worked on the musical arrangement and then took a run at the lyrics based on Seggie’s draft. What we came up with was what you hear on the record.”

Straight No Chaser rose to fame with its version of The 12 Days Of Christmas more than a decade ago. They later released a set of holiday albums, Holiday Spirits and Christmas Cheers, that sent them rocketing to Gold status with major label representation. Albums With A Twist (2010), Under The Influence (2013), The New Old Fashioned (2015), I’ll Have Another … Christmas Album (2016), One Shot (2018) and Social Christmasing (2020) followed.

Fancy Like was written by Hayes with Cameron Bartolini, Shane Stevens, and Josh Jenkins, and produced by Hayes with multi-GRAMMY Award winner Shane McAnally and Joe Thibodeau. The song is the fifth single from his six-song EP, Country Stuff, which features collaborations with Jake Owen, Carly Pearce and Lori McKenna.
