With her mature lyrical approach, Devon Beck’s smooth, distinctive voice envelopes the likes of Maren Morris and Adele into her unique sound, as she seamlessly fuses together country and pop flavors in her work, bridging the middle ground between country twang and soulful pop.
Since making the move from her hometown in Central Pennsylvania to Nashville to pursue her singing and songwriting career, Devon has quickly garnered attention from artists, songwriters, and insiders. Country star Jimmie Allen featured her on his ‘Instagram New Artist Showcase’ and named her as an “artist to watch” after the release of her EP, One Sided Expectations last year. She was recently crowned ‘Best New Band/Artist’ at the CPMAs and released her latest single, Mirrors, written by notable artist Sam Grow.
We caught up with Devon and asked her to tell us five things she always takes on the road for this week’s Rider Essentials.
1. My a-game
I believe it is always important to do your very best even if you aren’t feeling good or feeling up to performing that night. You never know who may be there, or watching you, in the room. Throughout my years of performing, I learned the importance of entertaining. The people that come to your shows or gigs are there to see you at your best! They don’t want to see you upset, tired and such. My mama always says, “put your Dolly on!”
I always make sure to carry at least 5 pairs of boots with me!! I always make sure to switch up my looks for each night and, normally, end up wearing my favourite boots, which are covered in rhinestones! I absolutely love the feeling of confidence when wearing boots while performing! It also helps that people always compliment them! lol!
3. My notebook/laptop
You never know where you might find inspiration or a new idea for a new song. Every time I have a song idea, it comes to me at the most random times and you want to write it down before you forget it! I also use my laptop to keep my website up to date! I am an extremely organised person and I like when my website is all up to date with shows and such!
4. My guitar
I ALWAYS make sure I have my guitar. It’s a great way to practice before a gig or just mess around and practice! Another reason why I carry my guitar with me is, I mentioned before, song ideas come at the most random times. It’s always a good idea to have your guitar handy so you can start the basis of a potential song idea.
5. My cat
I know this one’s a little funny, but I take her everywhere with me when I travel. When I drive or fly to gigs back and forth from Nashville and Pennsylvania, she goes with me! Living alone in Nashville can be tough sometimes but having her with me isn’t so lonely anymore. I don’t want her to be alone when I’m gone either, so I always make sure she’s along for the ride!
