It’s the most wonderful time of the year – and I don’t mean Christmas, I mean that magical month where we can blast holiday music and no one can judge us for it! Because, let’s face it, who doesn’t love Christmas music all year round?! This December, we are going to be adding our Songs of the Day to our very special Countrytown Christmas Playlist, complete with re-imagined country-style holiday classics as well as what are sure to be new festive favourites!

Nashville singer-songwriter, Sam Williams (son of Hank Williams Jr. and grandson of Hank Williams) has released a cover of the holiday classic, Blue Christmas. It’s our festive Song of the Day!

Originally recorded by Doye O’Dell and most famously performed by Elvis Presley, Sam has put his own spin on the festive track, with his soulful vocals and lush, string arrangements.

Sam says, “Blue Christmas is a classic that’s lonesome and vulnerable, while simultaneously fostering comfort to those of us feeling lonely during the holiday season. I love drawing from some of the original melodies while giving my own fresh version of the song.”

He also released a holiday new song called Snow Angels, which we also think is worth a mention. Written by Sam, Hillary Lindsey, Jonny Price and Andrew Dorff, and produced by Paul Moak, Snow Angels is a gorgeous ballad with warm melodies and melancholy lyrics that recall fleeting memories.

Sam has released the singles Darkwater (2016), The Lost Grandchild’s Plea (2018), which honours his late grandparents, Hank and Audrey Williams, and Gemini (2019). In 2020, he released a cover of Weatherman, as well as SHUTEYE and The World: Alone, a song he wrote in honour of his late sister Katie Williams. His album, Glasshouse Children was released last August, and includes duets with Dolly Parton and Keith Urban as well as our former Song of the Day, Can’t Fool Your Own Blood.
