Following last month’s reveal that her next release will be an “angry, confessional” rock album, Maren Morris has disclosed she’s working with legendary producer, Jack Antonoff.

In a video posted to TikTok, Morris writes, “The jack’s out of the bag.”

She captioned, “I swear I’m working #newmusic,” teasing she’s readying her next record.

Based in New York City, Antonoff is a singer-songwriter and record producer who has worked with the likes of Taylor Swift, The Chicks, Lana Del Ray, Florence And The Machine, Lorde and Fifth Harmony. He’s also the lead singer of rock band Bleachers, as well as the guitarist and drummer in the pop rock group Fun. Antonoff was previously the lead singer of indie rock group Steel Train.

Antonoff has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award and won eight Grammy Awards, including the 2022 and 2023 Grammy for ‘Producer of the Year’. He has also won Grammy Awards for his work with Fun, for production on Swift's albums 1989 and Folklore, for production on St. Vincent's album Daddy’s Home, and for co-writing the title track on St. Vincent's Masseduction.

The new album will be Morris' first project since 2022’s Humble Quest, which debuted at #2 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. The album also broke an Amazon Music record for the most first day and first week streams globally for an album released by a female country artist.

Morris began writing Humble Quest in the beginning of the pandemic as a series of major life changes unfolded—new motherhood, an upended career, the death of beloved friend and collaborator Michael Busbee and more, further compounded by lockdown.

“I think my last record was super internal and organic, feeling tons of guitars, steel guitar. It felt like very organic country. And this one is going in a more rock direction,” Morris told Katie & Company’s Katie Neal at Audacy’s Leading Ladies event on International Women’s Day (March 8). “It’s really fun. I’m excited because it’s just all my influences are getting barfed out on this one.”

During their conversation at the Hard Rock Hotel in New York City, Neal asked Morris, “You mentioned that you’ve been writing a lot and you’ve been playing some demos and stuff. What can you say about the next chapter of music that you’re working on right now?”

“I mean, it’s thus far pretty confessional and I mean, I feel like it’s a rock realm it’s going into,” Morris replied. “I don’t quite know what it is yet. They’re just demos, so I kind of find out when I get in the studio. But yeah, it’s [like a] diary.”

“[It’s] visceral, super vulnerable, but fun too,” she continued. “So, I don’t know, on my last record, it was during the pandemic, so we tried to just do what we could during that time where everything was remote, doing Zoom sessions, [and] whatnot. And this feels like we’re back.”
