Mackenzie May finished high school just a couple of months ago, but she’s already well on her way to becoming Australia’s next big county star – and today (March 1) she releases her striking debut single, Little Things.

“I’m really excited to be releasing music for the first time,” May said in a press release. “For me the creative process of writing, recording and performing is what it’s all about and if people like what I’m doing as much as I am enjoying that process then that’s really what I’m hoping to achieve.”

The 17-year-old singer-songwriter, hailing from Central Queensland, co-wrote the track alongside The Buckleys legend Sarah Buckley. She laid it down in the studio with producer Jared Adlam, and went on to say in her statement: “The studio was a really natural space for me and I really enjoy the creativity that studio space brings out.

“As an independent artist, you get used to doing so many shows and learning about the reaction your songs get, whether it’s in a cafe or on a bigger stage. The studio gives you the opportunity to take everything you’ve learned from road testing your songs with an audience and create something that represents who you are at a point in time.”

Little Things the first recorded song May is giving to the world, but it’s part of a sprawling discography just waiting to be unearthed: Buckley has been writing and performing for years, and recently graduated from the esteemed Junior Academy of Country Music. In the way of inspiration, she cites the likes of Chris Stapleton, Colter Wall and Sierra Ferrell.

May was also a finalist in last year’s Ekka Country Music Showdown, and comes hot off the heels of her six shows at this year’s Tamworth Country Music Festival. She notably walked away from the latter festival with her first professional award, being honoured as the Tamworth Songwriter’s Association’s Novice Songwriter Of The Year.
