To get to know Josh Setterfield a bit, after releasing his new single Hometown, we’ve asked what he loves about his hometown, Wangi Wangi!

More Josh Setterfield More Josh Setterfield

Regional towns are in our blood here at CountryTown! From Ballarat to Broome. We love the pubs, the people and the places that make Australia tick. But most of all, we love the amazing country musicians our regional centres produce, like Josh Setterfield.

Raised in Wangi Wangi, near Newcastle, Josh Setterfield's first single Hometown was an ode to the small town. Originally fronting a pop punk band for over six years, he transitioned into the country scene in 2016, later releasing his first EP From Dusk - which debuted at #3 on the iTunes country charts. He recently released the five-track sequel EP Till Dawn, which includes the successful singles Broke and The Way God Made Me.

To get to know Josh Setterfield a bit we’ve asked what he loves about his hometown, Wangi Wangi!

1. The location

Wangi Wangi is a little fishing town about 45 mins south of Newcastle. My grandparents’ house, where I spent most of my time growing up, is right at the very tip of Wangi, as far as you can go into the town, right on the waterfront and near the boat ramp.

2. World War II

At the top of the walking trails up in the bush land, there are remnants of World War II. You can find the placements for gun turrets and shelters which were part of an anti-aircraft command centre built to protect the Rathmines RAAF seaplane base from the invading Japanese.

3. Things to do

My favourite thing about this little town is that there isn’t a hell of a lot to do, and I love that part of it. You can go walking and explore the bush tracks up to the World War II sites, go fishing, or just sit and enjoy the place. Anytime I go back there, it’s an amazing place to escape to and just be with your thoughts.

4. The people

I love the people of Wangi. Most of whom I have met through my grandparents. Every person you meet from this town knows exactly what I talk about when I say how amazing it truly is. For such a small town, there’s so many amazing people. No matter where you bump into them, there's always a friendly face

5. What it means to me

This place made me. It’s an enormous part of who I am. Every memory I have of this place is warm in my heart. I spent majority of my childhood here, riding bikes, walking the trails, fishing with my Pop, just living life as a kid. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to grow up. Every time I leave, I miss it even more.  It’s truly my favourite place in the entire world and, if ever I feel lost, I know exactly where to go to find myself again.
