It’s the most wonderful time of the year – and I don’t mean Christmas, I mean that magical month where we can blast holiday music and no one can judge us for it! Because, let’s face it, who doesn’t love Christmas music all year round?! This December, we are going to be adding our Songs of the Day to our very special Countrytown Christmas Playlist, complete with re-imagined country-style holiday classics as well as what are sure to be new festive favourites!

Carly Pearce brings new life to a timeless classic with a new version of Mary, Did You Know – it’s our festive Song of the Day! The song ponders the questions one would ask if given the chance to speak with Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ.

The song was written in 1984 by songwriter Mark Lowry as part of the script for a church Christmas play. According to PBS, it wasn't until 1991 that he teamed up with a Southern gospel songwriter named Buddy Greene and the song was brought to life. It was first recorded by Michael English, one of Lowry’s fellow band-members, and has since been covered by hundreds of singers in a broad variety of styles, becoming a treasured Christmas classic.

Following a tumultuous 2020, Pearce’s third studio album, 29: Written In Stone – an expansion of her successful 29 EP – produced by Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne, was released in September. The 15-song project will include the EP’s original seven tracks with an addition eight cuts, including Dear Miss Loretta, which features country singer, Patty Loveless.

Billboard recently named 29: Written In Stone as one of the best albums of the year, with the title track included as one of NPR Music’s ‘100 Best Songs of 2021’, amongst other accolades.
