Maren Morris will release her new album, Humble Quest, on March 25. The album features lead single, Circles Around This Town, released last week, which broke Amazon Music’s record for most streams for a country song debut by a female artist.

Morris told New Music Daily on Apple Music 1, “Circles Around This Town is special because it’s probably the most specifically autobiographical song I’ve ever written. All the songs that I write are about my story, but this one was very specific to my journey from Texas to Nashville nine years ago to become a songwriter, which then led in to me becoming an artist that I am today, but I wasn’t sure the day that we wrote it if I was willing to get that specific in a song because at the end of the day, you want it to be your story, but you want it to apply to everyone in some way where they can hear themselves in it, but I just decided to go for it, and I felt like that was the smartest thing and the most emotional thing was just even though this song is super upbeat and jangly, it’s really about keeping the gas pedal down on your dreams.”

She adds, “I hope that when listeners hear it, they can hear a bit of themselves in that story, even though it is mine. I feel like everyone’s got a daydream, everyone has a goal, and it’s really just about knowing that the target is always moving but knowing that if it’s something you really love and you want to put the time and effort into it, it doesn’t feel like a job.”

The song also marks Morris’ first new music in three years. She last released the CMA Award-winning album Girl in 2019, which included the singles Girl, The Bones and To Hell & Back.

Morris began writing the songs on Humble Quest in the beginning of the pandemic as a series of major life changes unfolded—new motherhood, an upended career, the death of beloved friend and collaborator Michael Busbee and more, further compounded by lockdown. She felt control over life quickly slipping until she had a freeing realisation—she was never in control in the first place. It’s from this place of personal truth and clarity amid darkness that Morris’ most genuine songs yet began to flow, creating an important distraction from the times rather than a snapshot of them.

Produced by frequent collaborator Greg Kurstin and written alongside her husband and fellow country artist Ryan Hurd as well as Julia Michaels, Jimmy Robbins, Natalie Hemby, Laura Veltz and Jon Green, Humble Quest will contain 11 songs including Circles Around This Town, The Furthest Thing, I Can’t Love You Anymore, Humble Quest, Background Music, Nervous, Tall Guys, Detour, Hummingbird, Good Friends and What Would This World Do?

Morris first announced the album news on social media, sharing pictures from the album, along with a letter to fans in which she described the record as “country-er” than her last and “really hopeful.”

Morris wrote in part, “It turns out the pandemic did humble me. Shooting off my mouth one time too many humbled me, the death of a beloved friend and producer humbled me, motherhood and marriage humbled me. 'Humble' began to feel more like a grounded state of understanding oneself; not so much by being relatable to or understood by all.”

She concludes, “Am I humble enough now? Maybe. Or maybe I still haven’t found it yet. Or maybe, who gives a sh** as long as your friends and, most importantly, you know what your heart is all about? But here’s to taking the quest to find out.”
