Following the news of the departure of Richie McDonald, Lonestar has named Drew Womack of Sons of the Desert fame as the group’s lead singer.

Guitarist Michael Britt, drummer Randy “Keech” Rainwater and keyboardist Dean Sams, the remaining three principals of the band, will tour later this year.

Lonestar said in a press release, "We are thrilled to have Drew joining us. We have been friends and have admired his work and outstanding voice for many years. It will be an exciting new chapter in our storied career and know he will be welcomed by the industry and fans alike."

Sons of the Desert was a country music band who disbanded in 2004. They released two albums, which featured many charting hits, including Whatever Comes First, Hate of Fate and What I Did Right. They also collaborated with Lee Ann Womack on her number one crossover hit, I Hope You Dance.

Womack said, "I can't adequately express just how excited I am to join these guys and create and make music with Dean, Keech, and Michael. I've known and respected them since (Sons Of The Desert) played the same circuits and it'll be an honour to be on stage with them.”

McDonald announced his departure last week. He previously left the band for the first time at the end of 2007 and was replaced by former McAlyster vocalist, Cody Collins. McDonald has now teamed up with Little Texas lead singer, Tim Rushlow and Restless Heart lead singer, Larry Stewart to form The Frontmen of Country.

McDonald said, “I’ve been with Lonestar for almost 30 years and have enjoyed my time with the guys. With everything that has happened in the past year, it has made me think about other things I want to do in life. This opportunity with the Frontmen came up, and I’ve decided to go a new direction.”

Lonestar recently reunited to perform their number one single, Amazed on Phil Vassar’s Song From The Cellar, some 22 years after its 1999 release. Their last studio album was Never Enders, released in 2016.
