The Old Town Road singer shared that the idea to announce the album with a pregnancy photo shoot with photographer, Adrian Per came after listening to Megan Thee Stallion’s verse on his new song Dolla Sign Slime for the first time.

He told PEOPLE, "I was like, 'Oh my God, this is amazing,' so I immediately called my stylist. She was like, 'Wow, this all comes together. Your album. Your baby.' I was like, 'Yeah, this is my baby, huh?' As a joke, she was like, 'Yeah, you should do a pregnancy shoot.'"

Lil Nas X first announced the track list and SpongeBob SquarePants/John Stephens-inspired cover art on September 1st. He pointed fans to a verse from the Book of Genesis, namely a portion about how an alleged higher power made the decision to rest for a day after whipping up a whole universe.

He later added, “the album art is a continuous loop, to represent the circle of life.”

From the personal Sun Goes Down to the catchy Industry Baby, the songs on the new album represent Lil Nas X's total journey as well as his past year in lockdown. The album also features collaborations with Elton John, Miley Cyrus, Doja Cat and Jack Harlow.

He says, "You're getting a lot of stories about me. You're getting a lot of stories about my past and where I want to be in my love life. But they're also a bop. I feel like I finally found a great balance between being as real as possible within my music and making a hit song."

The album shares its name with Lil Nas X’s birth name (Montero Lamar Hill) as well as his hit single, Montero (Call Me By Your Name). Despite the controversy of its sexually explicit homosexual lyrics and accompanying music video which was criticised for featuring a stripper pole to hell and a steamy lap dance for Satan, the song recently surpassed 900million streams on Spotify and peaked at number one of Australia’s ARIA Charts, where it was later certified 2x platinum.
