Keith Urban has released the video for his latest single Out The Cage, which features Cross Country singer, Breland and guitarist, producer and living legend, Nile Rodgers, famous for his work in Chic, with Daft Punk and pioneering modern music. Urban and Breland penned the song together during a writing session in Nashville – one of four they wrote together that day, in fact.
Speaking to The Boot, Urban said, “When [Breland and I] were writing the song, I said, ‘I really, really want this to be a song that speaks to liberation of all sorts,’ even if that’s somebody in a dead-end job, somebody that’s stuck in a relationship that’s going nowhere and they can’t get out, someone who’s sort of imprisoned in their own mind. You know, that line, ‘In my mind’s eye lies the key that’ll open the door / You can’t break me, there’s a new day coming,’ is just trying to take back that power inside all of us, to keep pushing outwards and breaking out of any confinement.”
Breland added, when talking to American Songwriter, “Keith told me he’s always strived to create music that feels like Keith, and him telling me that was really inspiring to me because the space that I occupy out here in Nashville and in the music industry is someone that is trying to blend sounds together and create new ones.”
Out The Cage appears on Urban’s 11th studio album, The Speed of Now Pt. 1, released in September 2020, which also features the singles We Were, God Whispered Your Name and the smash hit, One Too Many featuring pop singer, Pink.
The music video premiere comes just three days after Urban co-hosted the 56th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards alongside Mickey Guyton on Sunday, where he gave a high-energy performance of the track Tumbleweed. Urban recently also appeared in two songs on Taylor Swift’s Fearless (Taylor’s Version) album.
