Jason Owen has teamed up with country music legend, James Blundell for a charitable new single, released last week. Covering Cat Steven’s 1970 smash hit, Father and Son, proceeds of the single will go towards this year’s toy run fund for Owen’s charity, Doin It For Rural Aussie Kids.

Owen says, “I’ve long looked up to James as one of the most amazing country singers Australia has ever produced. So, I was ecstatic when he jumped at the chance to do a duet for the charity. Father and Son is such an iconic song. I wanted to tie it into the plight of farmers and their sons on the land ahead of Father’s Day this year as it’s a really emotive track.”

Doin It for Rural Aussie Kids was established by Owen in 2019 to help rural and isolated children affected by issues such as bushfires, drought, floods, COVID-19 fallout, and economic impacts. Each year, the singer embarks on a road trip across multiple states to hand deliver toys, groceries, and funds to kids whose families have been doing it tough.

Last year, The X Factor runner-up crossed four states and 8,000km in 10 days helping more than 1,000 kids in need. This year, he plans to embark on a nationwide road trip visiting every state in Australia, covering a huge 15,000km, given the lifting of border restrictions.

“If COVID restrictions are still in place, we will still be sending toys and stationery to kids via mail, and I will be connecting with them for motivational chats via Zoom.”

Owen has also teamed up with Kids Helpline charity to help spread the word about young people’s mental health in rural Australia. Adding, he had a near-death experience when he was younger, and has suffered from PTSD and anxiety thorough his life as a result.

“When I was 11 my father and I were almost killed in a serious motorbike accident which set off my PTSD and set me up for future anxieties. I never discussed it with anyone, but I wish I had now.”

Following the release of the single, Owen announced via social media that he and his wife, Becy are expecting their first child in February 2022. The 27-year-old proposed to her live on Studio 10 in 2019, and the couple married in June this year after postponing the wedding three times due to the pandemic.

In 2012, Owen released his debut album, Life Is A Highway, which debuted at #1 on the ARIA Country Chart and number five on the Australian National ARIA Chart. He has since released albums Friday Night containing his first original hit Damn Right, as well as Proud, his first all-originals album celebrating his First Nations background, Jason Owen Sings John Denver: The 20th Anniversary and Jason Owen Sings John Denver: The Acoustic Sessions which debuted at #1 on the ARIA Country Music Charts in May 2021.

Earlier this year, Owen won two awards in the prestigious 7News Young Achiever of the Year 2021 NSW/ACT Awards for his work with Doin It For Rural Aussie Kids. He picked up both the Freemasons of NSW/ACT Community Service Award and 2DayFM People’s Choice Award. Previously, he has been nominated for Golden Guitars and CMC Awards.

Blundell recently teamed with Lily Grace on Sweet Annie June, which peaked at #31 on the Countrytown Music Network Hot 50 Country Airplay Chart and has been a chart success on radio, iTunes and CMT as well as thousands of streams worldwide.
