We pegged her as one to watch in our 28 viral TikTok country artists you need to know! Now, Our Song of the Day is her latest single, How Do We Go by Alexandra Kay. The viral sensation first shared a demo of the new song on her TikTok account, and her nearly two million followers loved it.
Penned by Alexandra with Lizzie Cates and Matt Wynn, the initial idea was for a breakup song that asks first, how things went from good to bad. At the end, she asks where do they go from here.
Alexandra tells Music Mayhem, “I was completely blown about by the reaction to this song when I first started teasing it on TikTok in March. I had come into the room with the concept of ‘How did we go from so great to so far apart? How did we get here? But then turning it around and asking … but how do we go? Like … how do we leave?’ Matt Wynn, one of the co-writers along with co-writer Lizzie Cates, suggested we switch the concept around to more of a question of ‘How do we make this better?’ And we were off! We stayed up until 1:00 AM writing that song. I am so incredibly proud of it and what it has done to comfort people going through a strain in their relationship. Also, I got to write it with my friends … ain’t nothing better than that!”
Growing up about 40 minutes from St. Louis Missouri in Waterloo, Illinois, Alexandra began writing songs at the age of 15 as a way to cope with being a teenager, first loves and finding herself. She grew up with a competitive nature, learning discipline and developing her work ethic during her years of competitive softball. She got her start in the entertainment business booking commercials and voice over work at a young age. Performing in multiple musical theatre productions, Alexandra decided to try her luck as a contestant on American Idol in 2011.
She started working in hip hop and R&B in early 2012. Working with notable artists such as Nelly and Huey Alexandra created enough buzz to sign an independent record deal with Nettwork Entertainment in 2013. Her first single, No More was a radio hit, spending three weeks at #1 on the New Music Weekly Top 40 pop chart, also scoring at the top of Hot AC and Hot 100 charts.
Starting her country music career independently at 22, Alexandra began recording cover videos of many 90’s country music favourites and posting them on her Facebook fan page. She quickly drew a dedicated fan base of over 526,000 followers to date on Facebook and has recently captivated a new audience with 126,000 followers on Instagram, and 1.9 Million TikTok followers.
The singer-songwriter has accomplished a multitude of career milestones to date, including her appearance on The Voice, a starring role in the Netflix original series, Westside and reaching the number one spot on the iTunes country chart independently with her 2nd and 3rd indie releases I Kinda Don’t and All The Cowboys. Her single We Wouldn’t Be Us debuted at #3 on the iTunes country chart. She is currently preparing to release more singles in 2021.
