Countrytown is proud to premiere the music video for How Am I Supposed To Be A Mother by four times Golden Guitar nominated group, The New Graces. Comprised of Kate Burke, Robyn Martin, and Melanie Horsnell, all are seasoned identities in the Australian music scene, solo artists in their own right, and part of bands you heard on the radio, or danced to around a festival campfire.

Written by Melanie, How Am I Supposed To Be A Mother is the first song released from the Open Heart Sessions - a three song single series and tour, recorded and mixed by Shane Nicholson on Mother’s Day 2021, and produced by The New Graces, at The Sound Hole on a long day session under the gums of the central coast.  As Open Heart Sessions suggests it’s a three-part look, one by each songwriter, at life as a woman living in country NSW.

Melanie says, “I wrote it a week before Mother’s Day, Robyn and Kate had written two beautiful songs for our project and I was sweeping up at work thinking about songs and mothering and a little overwhelmed by everything when the line ‘How Am I Supposed To Be A Mother’ came to mind, in despair and also in a longing to be a really good one.  It’s difficult to describe as it’s all in the lyric, which came out by candlelight at the kitchen table that night - firstly all the worries one has, and then the beautiful things our children say to us when we really feel like giving up hope.”

The song features Melanie playing mandola and bouzouki on the recording, with Kate’s rolling flat picking guitar on percussive counter melody, her fiddle line melodically yearning, and Robyn’s deep double bass bowed, the 3 part harmony comes together on a song looking at life as a woman and mother in these current times. It’s a conversational, honest, and very human song, a balance of a mother’s self-doubt and hope, all underpinned by love, under stress and difficulty a confidence that it’s all likely to turn out OK.
