Front Deck Boom Box: Blake O’Connor

20 July 2021 | 11:35 am | Mallory Arbour

We caught up with singer-songwriter and guitarist Blake O’Connor to find out what songs he’s listening to for this week’s Front Deck Boom Box.

Singer-songwriter and guitarist Blake O’Connor recently released his catchy new single, Soul Feeling. He explains that the inspiration for writing the single came around the time he was listening to a lot of soul-inspired music and watching a bunch of old videos of the Muscle Shoal Swampers. The music video was shot in a local laundromat in Port Macquarie days before it was due to be renovated, and embraces 70’s era of soul music and the fun and energy of this country-pop tune, .

Soul Feeling follows on from Willin’ & Ready, a song that pushed him back into the spotlight earlier this year and reached #14 on the national country airplay chart. He released his #1 ARIA debut album, Everything I Feel in 2019, after winning Toyota Star Maker in the same year. He later picked up the ‘Best New Talent of the Year’ Golden Guitar award at the Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2020.

We caught up with Blake to find out what songs he’s listening to for this week’s Front Deck Boom Box.

Rain Maker - Troy Cassar-Daley

Troy’s new album is killer! This tune is a stand out for me. Troy’s vocal is great and there’s a low vocal lick he does at about 51 sec that gets me every time!! The whole vibe of this track is awesome and the way it’s been produced is really earthy and brings the song to another level! A great song to jam to as well (which is always a bonus for a guitar player, haha).

It’s Gonna Be Alright - Sinead Burgess

This song is really what you need to hear sometimes, especially during a global pandemic! Sinead is an amazing artist all round, from her songwriting to musicianship. Something I’ll never forget is hearing her sing every night when we toured together throughout 2020 and 21. Such a beautiful voice.

Arkansas - Chris Stapleton

What’s not to like about Chris Stapleton?! He’s just the coolest fella around! This tune has vibe oozing out of it for days! And the way the drums are holding back for the bulk of the song, just builds up the tension until they kick up to double time, puts me straight into jam land!! He is one of the best artists around!

Like Hank Would - Melody Moko

Melody is one hell of a songwriter. I heard this song for the first time in a writer’s round and it blew me away! Just real! That’s my favourite part hearing her songs, they are right from the heart and it’s very inspiring to hear as a songwriter.

Time Stands - Nathaniel Rateliff

Nathaniel Rateliff is one of my favourite artists. The songs from the And It’s Still Alright album are some of my favourite songs! This one stood out to me most – I find it takes me on a journey every time I listen to it! The sparsity on the production is such a breath of fresh air, and the truth in the lyric is another thing in itself!
