Australian country-meets-rock music singer and songwriter Tori Forsyth is in Brisbane this week for the music conference and showcase event, BIGSOUND. Before the multi-day event takes place tomorrow, Countrytown caught up with Forsyth for a quick Q&A.

In case you’re unfamiliar with Forsyth, here’s what you need to know: In May 2021, she dropped the 13-track album Provlépseis, which she found inspiration in Greek explorations of mythology, and channelled her diverse influences, including Miley Cyrus, Stevie Nicks, The Cranberries, Nirvana, and The Pretty Reckless, amongst others.

Provlépseis means predictions in Greek,” she explained about the album title. “Most of the new album was recorded pre-pandemic, and it’s interesting to interpret the lyrics with the benefit of hindsight; where I might not have really known what a few songs meant at the time, I definitely do now … I’m a pretty spiritual person, but I think that just goes to show how important it is to listen to your intuition.”

Since being Countrytown’s Artist Of The Week and scoring our Song Of The Day with All For You, Forsyth has toured across the country and played numerous festivals, including at Groundwater Music Festival next month. You can get to know more about Forsyth in the Q&A below.

Elevator pitch: Describe yourself as an artist and your music…

Inspiration and expression first, everything else second. Lyrically driven with the sound built around the story. I'm a lifer artist and expect to be doing this when I'm 70, so integrity is everything.

What has been the biggest turning point in your career so far?

My career has been built on many small moments and interactions with incredible, selfless people who want the best for a musical project. For sure, no one incident that happened, so this is a really PC answer to a tough question, haha!

Which other country act are you most excited to see at BIGSOUND and why?

Loren Ryan! Heard lots of great things!

What are your thoughts on the current state of the country music scene in Australia?

She's growin’ and expandin’, baby! When I started releasing music in country at 19 years old, the landscape was very different. The fanbase is growing. In the USA, the industry is turning towards music first, marketing second, and Aus is following suit. Excellent, what a win for us.

What do you hope to take away from BIGSOUND 2023?

Honestly, as a band, we more hope to add. We hope to represent country music with lyrically driven songs that are sonically grounding to the greater landscape of the Australian music scene. We feel grateful to be part of it; anything else is a bonus.

Tori Forsyth will appear at BIGSOUND 2023. You can check out the BIGSOUND schedule here.
