We caught up with Central Coast-based rising artist, Ella Powell to find out the things she always takes on the road with her for this week’s Rider Essentials

More Ella Powell More Ella Powell

Central Coast-based rising artist, Ella Powell has already made an impressive mark in the Australian music industry at the tender age of eighteen (it was her birthday yesterday!). Creating a unique blend of country, pop and folk, fans of Jewel, Taylor Swift and Kelsea Ballerini will connect with Ella’s storytelling ability, honest lyrics and powerful vocals.

Her passion for country pop was cemented after winning ‘People's Choice Award’ out of over 400 artists at the prestigious Tamworth Country Music Festival in 2019. Ella has grown up on the stage and supported numerous artists as well as performing alongside some of the biggest names in the country music industry, including Adam Harvey at the Country Turns Pink Fundraiser.

Fresh from the success of Paper Town, which played on radio stations both nationally and internationally (we also premiered it here), comes her latest single, Side Effects. Through Ellas quality storytelling, relatable lyrics and sweet melodies, the upbeat, catchy track will have you feeling the Side Effects of love, loss, and all in between. Produced by Matt Fell with the support of musicians in Nashville, the single goes on a journey to express the importance of self-worth.

She will continue working with the award-winning producer on her future debut EP release.

We caught up with Ella Powell to find out the things she always takes on the road with her for this week’s Rider Essentials.

1. Mum’s home-made pasties

I don’t remember a huge amount about growing up in England as a young child, but I can never forget mum’s home-made pasties which was a huge family favourite! It’s a traditional English food and has been a top pick of mine throughout my teenage years. It definitely reminds me of the English countryside, little laneways, and very cold temperatures!

2. A VERY big suitcase

Anyone who knows me would know that I tend to overpack when I hit the road (and by quite a lot!). Whether I’m going for a couple months or a few days, I always seem to bring way too many clothes (you can never have to many outfit choices, right?), shoes for every occasion, collection of poetry books and a big stash of herbal teas!

3. Songwriting book

My songwriting book and a pen seem to go everywhere with me – to the beach, in the car, for a walk! You never know when inspiration will strike so it’s always best to be prepared! Constantly writing down ideas, journaling about your day or even just writing whatever comes to your mind first is the best way to get the creative juices flowing!

4. Happy Socks

I have a very large collection of socks ranging from penguins to pianos, but there is one particular pair (covered in multi-coloured donuts with a blue background) that I like to call my ‘happy socks’. I think they are quite lucky as well. I sometimes hide them under my shoes when I perform or have something important on… I even wore them to my HSC exams last year!

5. Maggie

We are talking about a puppy who has to hold your hand when you’re sitting next to her, so I don’t think she’d allow me to go anywhere without her…. and her favourite teddy (a sloth) can never be out of sight either! From rescuing her as a young pup, she’s become a huge part of the family but has become quite the princess who enjoys laying on the sofa with a pillow and blanket!

I think Maggie wants lockdown to never end… can’t say I agree!😬 🐾 Anyone get up to anything exciting in lockdown today?...
