More Glenn Skuthorpe More Glenn Skuthorpe

Muruwari man and country music veteran Glenn Skuthorpe (the mastermind behind the Glenn Skuthorpe Band) and Territory-born Aboriginal artist Nathan May are both BIGSOUND bound, ready to show off their music and lock in some new contacts working at record labels or possible new agents.

At differing points in their careers, the pair found a common thread in a fellow country artist and Gamilaraay woman, Loren Ryan, who both gushed over in today’s Q&A ahead of their appearances at BIGSOUND 2023.

Which act(s) are you most excited to see at BIGSOUND and why?

Looking forward to seeing Loren Ryan and Jungaji. Loran brings a new sound to country music while proudly sharing her culture through her songs. Jungaji is a must-see, a great talent that carves through RnB/Soul like no other.

Elevator pitch: Describe yourself as an artist and your music…

My music is a fusion of genres: a little country, rock and a bit of blues. I've had the fortune to tour the world through my music and independently produce six highly regarded albums, with my 7th on the way.

What has been the biggest turning point in your career so far?

International touring and forging strong ties with First Nations artists in Canada.

What is the most challenging thing about being an artist in 2023?

Time management has been a big challenge for me in 2023. It's been a jam-packed year of performances and travel, so I've really had to stay focused to manage this year’s busy schedule.

What do you hope to take away from BIGSOUND 2023?

From BIGSOUND 2023, I'm really looking forward to developing new networks throughout the industry and having the opportunity to discuss my future goals with delegates.

Elevator pitch: Describe yourself as an artist and your music…

I like to think of myself as a storyteller. I really try to achieve to take people on a journey with my music. I have a lot of country influence in my music because I grew up listening to it, and I love how some of my favourite songs take me on a journey.

What has been the biggest turning point in your career so far?

For me, it has been working with all the people I have been with within the last three years. Co-writing songs with some of the best songwriters here in Australia has been a massive turning point so far. With people like James Gillard, Rod McCormack, Colin Buchanan, Luke O’Shea and the great Kevin Bennett. It’s been the greatest thing to have ever happen.

Which other country act are you most excited to see at BIGSOUND and why?

I’m so excited to see Loren Ryan. I am the biggest fan of Loren, and  I love her music. I would love to collaborate with Loren one day.

What are your thoughts on the current state of the country music scene in Australia?

I really am loving the state of the country music scene. I think it’s becoming so much broader and so much different to the scene many years ago.

What do you hope to take away from BIGSOUND 2023?

Meeting new people in the industry and connecting with other artists. Hopefully, I can make great connections with the people I need to connect with to get where I need to be in the next few months.
