Front Deck Boom Box: Grace Amos

Taking inspiration from a range of genres including indie, country and pop, emerging singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Grace Amos has already established a local and international presence, having been selected to perform as part of the Australian tour for UK artist, HRVY, as well as being chosen as a finalist in the 2018 Discover Series. She was also the recipient of the 2018 Maton Guitars Britton Morrison Scholarship, which granted her the opportunity to attend the prestigious CMAA Academy of Country Music in Tamworth.

Hailing from rural NSW, Grace has since continued to develop strong connections with the local music community. In 2021, she launched her debut single, Listen Real Closely, which has since been played across national radio and streamed more than 36,000 times on Spotify alone.

In February, the 18-year-old released Decide. The single ushered in a new phase and transition for Grace, and the next step in her journey towards releasing her highly anticipated debut EP. Following her current release, a cover of Everlong by The Foo Fighters, she will drop her next single, Kiss You Til I’m Sober on April 29 - you can preorder it here.

We caught up with Grace Amos to find out what songs she’s listening to for this week’s Front Deck Boom Box.

1. Mother Mother by The Veronicas

I know it isn’t an original song by The Veronicas but I have been absolutely obsessed with their version of this song for months now. The instrumentation is so chaotic and I love its energy. I've been listening to The Veronicas since I was a little girl so listening to their music now gives me a deeper appreciation for their music and how creative they are.

2. Marinade by DOPE LEMON

I’ve always loved Angus and Julia Stone so when I discovered Angus created his own music under the name DOPE LEMON, I was so keen to listen to his individual sound. Marinade in particular has such a unique vibe to it and I love how it heavily relies on a story rather than a catchy melody or superficial ideas.

3. could cry just thinkin about you by Troye Sivan

I’ve always been a huge fan of Sivan and his music but this song feels different to me than his other music. The music is so simple, allowing for the song to be so raw and vulnerable and honest, reflecting the lyrics so magnificently. If you love Sivan’s other music, I highly recommend this beautiful song,I wish I could hear it again for the first time.

4. Booster Seat by Spacey Jane

When I first heard this song, I went straight to Google to research what the meaning behind it really was. I felt connected to it on a personal level but I wasn’t sure why. The song has deep connotations of anxiety and depression and vulnerability stemming from childhood experiences. I think everyone should re-listen to this song with this in mind - it makes it such a different listening experience and is honestly so beautiful. 

5. Overachiever by Vera Blue

I’ve been connecting to this song a lot lately. It’s so deep, touching on ideas of handling feelings in and out of relationships, figuring out what is real and what is best for not only your partner, but for yourself. Recently, I’ve been needing a song like this to remind me to live for myself and not for anyone else and to know my worth and what I deserve.
