After the huge success of their four times Golden Guitar and ARIA nominated debut album, The Song Club, and hot off the heels of taking home the AIR award for ‘Best Country Album’, Felicity Urquhart & Josh Cunningham are releasing their new single, ‘Bogswamp’ on Friday, August 26.

Inspired by the starry majesty of the Kimberley, Bogswamp is a rollicking singalong that captures a sound as timeless and Australian as staring at the coals of a campfire while the billy boils and a sky of diamonds shimmers overhead.

With nothing else for company but his guitar and his dog, that’s exactly where and how the song came to Josh.

The track was produced, performed, and recorded by the acclaimed duo in their home studio, mixed by James Newhouse at Lambchop records and mastered by William Bowden at King Willy Sound.

“I was looking to get unstuck from one of the bogswamps that life throws up, so I put myself into that setting looking for a bit of clarity,” reflects Josh. “I found it instantly in the sights, sounds and smells of the vast sky, the crackling fire, and the space that opened up around and within me. There’s something elusive and mysterious that’s easy to experience and difficult to describe in all of that, and it seemed that writing a song was my best shot at capturing what I was feeling.”

He adds, “Bogswamp was offered as a gift of gratitude and wonder - a serenade to the spellbinding magic and mystery of this unique land that I love so much and told as the tale of a guy and his dog on a journey that keeps them moving past the struggles of life by keeping it simple and staying connected through nature, music and mateship.”

The video for Bogswamp was produced, directed, and filmed by Duncan Toombs of The Filmery on a neighbour’s property in Kangy Angy on the Central Coast of NSW.

“We couldn’t be 100 percent faithful to the song by filming in the Kimberley, but we incorporated as many elements from the lyrics as we could - hence the spuds, pot of tea, campfire, stars, and of course, Wilson the Jack Russell,” says Josh.

“The ‘my little dog and me and no one else around’ lyric got Felicity out of a fair bit of screen time in the narrative part of the shoot, but we had a lot of fun in the performance footage that was filmed in our unfinished outdoor kitchen at home. The rustic, recycled feel of that space proved a perfect complement to the tracks and trails next door, and the process flowed so effortlessly that we were done in time for Duncan to get to the movies with his son for the 9:30pm session.”

Diverting Wilsons’ focus from the local sheep and the ever-present camera drone proved to be the only minor challenge of the day. However, with the appropriate enticements, Wilson emerged as not only the star of the shoot but also made his way into Duncan’s career top 5 list of animal actors in a remarkable debut performance.

Felicity and Josh will play the new track at the Gympie Music Muster (August 27), Deni Ute Muster (September 30), Murgon Music Muster (November 4) and the Queenscliff Music Festival (November 26-27) as well as a string of solo dates – tickets available here.
