Golden Guitar award-winner Kirsty Lee Akers and her husband Jesse are the fifth couple competing on the upcoming season of the Logie award-winning renovation reality series, The Block.

While the names of the contestants have yet to been confirmed by Channel Nine, Akers was spotted by Daily Mail Australia outside of the partially-demolished homes in Bronte Court cul de sac in the bayside Melbourne suburb of Hampton, where the series is currently filming.

Filming of season 17 began on February 28, with everyone from the contestants to hosts Scott Cam and Shelley Craft arriving on scene in full cowboy attire. Akers, dressed in a pink-tasseled mini dress and white boots, was spotted alongside familiar faces Mitch and Mark (who came fifth during The Block 2019) and Ronnie and Georgia (from season 2017), prompting speculation of another fans vs favourites season. Identical twins Luke and Josh, who appeared on Love Island 2019, were also on site.

On February 12, Akers announced via social media her intentions to take a break from music and would be unable to perform at Country Rocks in Bungadore on March 26.

She wrote, “It is with great disappointment, I must share with you, I will not be able to perform at Country Rocks … After the pain of COVID-19 lockdowns, and the long wait to get back to playing festivals, it is heartbreaking to make this kind of announcement … I have had to make the tough decision to take a little time away from music, to focus on an opportunity in my personal life. I have dedicated myself to music since the age of 4, so I have not taken this decision lightly … and I will be back before you know it.”

Since the announcement, she has been notably quiet on social media.

Last year’s winners of The Block, Jimmy and Tam, took home $1,066,000 when their property hit auction – the biggest cash prize in Australian TV – after their home sold for $4,256,000.

The Block 2021 will air later this year.
