Rising country singer-songwriter, Abbie Ferris has followed in the footsteps of some of the biggest country stars in the world, with two of her singles, Love Up On Me and her latest release, Ready Or Not featuring Canadian country stars, The Dungarees, now available in Dolby Atmos.

With Ferris consistently pushing the boundaries, elevating her music via emerging technologies was just one of the ways she found to keep momentum from lockdown. After hearing about the exciting new format, she immediately focused on how she could re-release her most successful tracks to date.

Ferris says, “I have been looking at every way I can to keep putting out my best music and improving what I do. I have been writing via Zoom with people around the world, I have been recording as many demos as possible in my apartment, and when I heard about Spatial audio, I saw it as another way to keep things moving forward. I can’t wait to be back in a real studio recording again or playing on a festival stage. It goes without saying, we are all done with being locked up, and can’t wait to get back to work.”

Re-mixed by her producer, Michael Carpenter, Love Up on Me immediately found its place in Apple Music’s Country in Spatial Audio playlist, joining a massive list of international names like Carly Pearce, Thomas Rhett, Jordan Davis, Keith Urban, Taylor Swift, Brett Young, Kacey Musgraves and many more. Ferris is one of the only artists in Australia who has a track available in 7.1 channel sound.

Carpenter has had a long-standing in Surround Sound and Atmos mixing and dived headfirst into learning and adopting the new Dolby Atmos format, overhauling his Love Hz Studios, and making the release format available for independent artists, including Ferris.

He says, “I really believe that Spatial Audio is the future for release formats for all artists. I wanted to be able to make this new format available and accessible for all artists, not just big name, big budget acts. It was a great process to be able to take the original mixes we did for Abbie Ferris’s tracks and re-imagine them into the new format. The greater depth of field allows the listener to have a heightened sonic experience, hearing more and more into the vision of what artists like Abbie intended. And it’s a lot of fun!”

Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos brings forth all the musical elements of a country music song, enabling the natural dynamics to shine with warmth and vibrancy – a strumming guitar, pedal steel, stirring vocals – in a three-dimensional sound. Available to all Apple Music subscribers using the latest version of Apple Music on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV, Dolby Atmos Music tracks can be heard using any headphones.

Ferris adds, “The sound is just next level. It feels like you are listening to a band play, with instruments coming at you from different directions. The 7.1 channels of sound make a massive difference. It is very cool!”

Ferris grew up on a 90-acre farm in Mallala (read more about it here). Her father worked the sale yards and Ferris was on horseback by the time she could walk. Soon after, she fell in love with music, picked up a guitar and started honing her craft as a singer-songwriter. After being awarded the Market The Music ‘Emerging Artist Scholarship’ in 2017, she made her festival debut at the Groundwater Country Music Festival.

Having cracked into the festival circuit in her debut year, she followed up with performances at Country at the Camp and Australian Music Week later in 2018, she also got her first taste of life on the road, touring with Hayley Jensen. In late 2019, Ferris was earmarked to support Golden Guitar winner Kirsty Lee Akers on her ‘Small Town, Big Hearts’ 2020 tour, until COVID-19 killed the 31-date tour. This will be revisited in 2022 once the pandemic has (hopefully) abated.

Ferris has released four singles to radio, including For A Moment in 2018, Beat You at Your Own Game in 2019, plus Love Up On Me and Bad Boy Crush in 2020, which have clocked up nearly 600,000 streams on Spotify and feature on the new EP. Each release has seen her improve her chart position, with the most recent release reaching #21 on the Official Airplay Chart and #3 on the Kix Country Hottest 20.

December 2019 saw a brief departure from original music as with the release of a concept EP, The Five – My Teens based on a re-imagining of the five songs that have influenced Ferris’s journey as an artist through her teens. After the success of that release, she turned her focus to her debut 6-track EP, Ready Or Not and relocated to the Central Coast in New South Wales.

Over the COVID-19 period, Ferris has written via video conference with some of the finest Australian, American and Canadian songwriters, with a load of songs ready to record over the coming years.
